NYC / LISSON GALLERY / ANISH KAPOOR

Sir Anish Mikhall Kapoor is one of the most globally recognized and celebrated large scale sculptors today. His conceptual art explores visual forms, perception, depth, reflection and typically involves unique engineering challenges. Notably, he works with a range of bold colors and textures as well as a separate focus on super highly reflective mirrored sculptural works. He creates a variety of shapes and scales that seem purposefully designed to engage and draw the viewer into the optical experience with a multitude of levels of perception. Kapoor’s art periods explore postminimalism, neo-expressionism and contemporary art.

Anish Kapoor was born in Mumbai, India in 1954 and has resided and worked in London since the early 1970s. His studies include the HornseyCollege of Art and Chelsea School of Art – both in London. Kapoor has won numerous recognition including: the Turner Prize (1991), honorary fellowships from the University of Wolverhampton, UK (1999), the Royal Institute of British Architecture, London, UK (2001) as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford, UK (2014). Anish Kapoor was awarded a CBE (2003) and a Knighthood (2013) for services related to visual arts.

A few notable large scale public projects include Cloud Gate (known as “The Bean” located (2004) in Millennium Park, Chicago, USA and Orbit (2012) in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, UK and Ark Nova (2013) the world's first inflatable concert hall in Japan. His works are part of the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Tate Gallery in London as well as others.

The images in this post are from a fantastically immersive experiential exhibition of Anish Kapoor’s sculptural works held at the Lisson Gallery in the West Chelsea gallery district in NYC -- where the artist masterfully evoked physical and emotional depth through his colorful art works and reflective large scale sculptures.
